From Monks to Mountain Gorillas A Family Global Journey eBook Ed Kaufman Reviews
A MUST read! Had a hard time putting it down, couldn't wait to read the next chapter! Felt a real connection to the experiences and the family as well!
I loved this book. Not a travel companion, but a journey into some of the most remote and infrequently visited parts of the world. By the time I finished, not only was I wanting to reproduce the trips and experiences described in the book, but I felt that I had also been on a small part of what seems to be a very interesting life journey. Ed Kaufman not only succeeds in pushing the boundaries of acceptable family vacationing to and beyond the limits, but takes us along on his inner spiritual journey through life. I was fascinated. If only I could tag my family along on any of his next adventures.... I highly recommend the book.
Like the packed flipsides of large format postcards, Kaufman's unpretentious prose will lull you into dangers men half his age wouldn't trade the recliner for. Friend of the world, this not-so-accidental tourist dives into glob trots with a new wife who, as the circumstances demand, calmly sleeps with hyenas or shows her breasts to Ethiopian tribeswomen, and his fearless new son who eats crocodile, calls in elephants and dances with Thai girls who know the "F" word. From Monks to Mountain Gorillas will have you wishing you were dancing the twist in Papua New Guinea.

As indicated by the title, Ed Kaufman's book takes us around the world with real, life family adventures. Each one is a great length (short), so that unlike the old and endless family slide show bloat, these snippets give one just a perfect taste of a place and leave one hungry for more. A blend of dramatic tension and local culture bring the experience of travel right to the arm chair. Relevant for all ages, my high school son snuck my copy away, so that he could enjoy it too. You should get a copy for yourself as well.
Not only has the Kaufman family traveled to places I've never been, the addition of the family, especially their son, Adam, inspires me. The teenage son seems to connect easily with people from other very different cultures with ease. And Kaufman's wife displays a spirit of adventure than gives me pause. The brief stories of their adventures take me away from my comfort zone and I find myself yearning to "take a chance" and visit these remote places. Don't miss the adventure.
